I recently traveled through Morocco and was enchanted by the atmosphere in the stylishly decorated Riads where I slept. A Riad is a traditional Moroccan house with an interior garden or courtyard.

Riad Layla in Fes

In really every Riad there is a certain tranquility, a mysterious atmosphere that immediately evokes a vacation feeling. The feeling of not having to do anything at all for a while. Tell yourself, you want to flop down in these pillows, don’t you? When I got home, I was so inspired that I wanted to bring that atmosphere back into my home.

With these tips, you can create this oriental atmosphere that stands for comfort, warmth and coziness.

Beni Ouarain rug

A must-have for this style is a Beni Ouarain rug. This is a hand-knotted rug made of sheep’s wool. The rugs are easily available in the Netherlands through various web shops but quite pricey because they are hand-knotted. Nowadays you can also find good look a like rugs at Karwei or Kwantum, for example. Or you can choose pillows with the same pattern.

Pouf and floor cushions

Cushions and poufs in different shapes and sizes fit well into this atmosphere. Grouped together or an ottoman that acts as a side chair or as a seating area when you have friends over.

Color use

Earth tones such as terracotta and rust blend well with the Oriental atmosphere. But even in a white base you can reflect an oriental touch, by adding it to pillows or accessories, for example.

Materials

Materials such as marble, natural stone and pottery instantly give the luxurious look. Create this effect on the table or in the kitchen with beautiful pottery served on Fabryk’s tapas board.

Accessories

Accessories are very important for this style, think lanterns, mirrors, tagines, woven baskets. The Hamsa hand is another example of a symbol that instantly creates an oriental atmosphere. The hamsa hand, also called the hand of Fatima, is a symbol from the Middle East and represents good luck and protection.
